Online activity to help the LSC Foundation award scholarships
Students complete online scholarship applications twice a year for the forthcoming semester. They answer demographic and academic questions, give essay answers about goals, past efforts, as well as upload letters of recommendation. Our Award Spring software program determines which scholarships they qualify for; however, we want humans to evaluate essay answers and submitted letters of recommendation.
Purpose of Volunteer Reviewers
- Give a numeric score on sections of the application
- Each volunteer’s scores will be added to other volunteers’ scores for a total score
- Scores assist Foundation staff in awarding the scholarships a student is qualified to receive
Logistics
- Volunteers receive emailed instructions for accessing the Award Spring portal where they review applications at any time during the review period
- A batch of roughly 20 applications will be randomly assigned to each volunteer from the entire pool of students from all programs at LSC
- Each application should take about 15-20 minutes to score
- Total time commitment for each season is about 5-7 hours
- Couples or small groups can do a batch together but all reviewers should be adults and not current LSC students
- Large groups can also review applications as a team building activity over a long lunch hour in a conference room for example
