Four Lake Superior College students, along with Terrence Wilcox, biology faculty member and mentor for LSC's Bridges to Baccalaureate program, had the opportunity to attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists on November 9 – 12 in Anaheim, California, where high school, community college and first-year undergrads meet to share their scientific research with the STEM community. Pictured left to right are: Amara Wilcox (medical laboratory technician), Terrence Wilcox, Max Pohlman (biology, AA), Kaylene Johnson (nursing), and Kurt O'Connor (Civil Engineering Technology AAS and AA).

For 20 years, the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Students (ABRCMS) has been the go-to conference for underrepresented community college, undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As ABRCMS has continued to grow and evolve, it has also become a space for graduate students, postdocs, faculty, program administrators and more. #ABRCMS2022 #STEM #LakeSuperiorCollege #LSCproud

Lake Superior College's Tutoring and Learning Center Director Nicola Scott nominated Juan for the Mark M. Welter Award and had the following to say:

"Juan works in our TLC Math Lab and creates a welcoming and inviting space for all students from any background to feel comfortable. Juan is always looking for new ways to remove barriers to success and submitted a proposal to the VP of Student Affairs and TLC Director to implement more equitable support for math classes. He is always centrally involved in events relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and as Student Senate President, he promotes and advocates for students from various countries, spaces, and backgrounds. He is conscious of the climate and how the world is interdependent and is always looking for ways to connect with students."

The Mark M. Welter Award is awarded to Minnesota State students who understand the interconnected nature of the world, its nations, and all people. Twenty students will receive $500 awards (still only one per institution).

Congratulations, Juan! #LSCProud #LakeSuperiorCollege #LeadMN #studentleadership
