LSC Student Stories

Looking back, I am grateful that my path began at LSC. The individual attention, supportive environment, and strong academic foundation I received there helped prepare me not only for the challenges of medical school, but for the career in medicine I am working toward today.

My journey into healthcare began in part at Lake Superior College, where I was able to take an affordable CNA course and gain my first hands-on experience caring for patients. That experience was incredibly valuable in helping me understand what it means to work in healthcare and strengthened my desire to pursue medicine. I am now continuing that journey through medical school as I work toward becoming a physician and, ultimately, a surgeon.

I am currently a student-doctor at Kansas City University, pursuing my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree with the goal of becoming a physician. Before beginning medical school, I gained valuable experience across several areas of healthcare, including working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), pharmacy technician, and in healthcare operations.

As I look at the rigor of my classes in medical school, I have come to appreciate even more how much my experience at Lake Superior College prepared me for this journey. Rather than feeling that attending a community college put me at a disadvantage, I actually believe it gave me an advantage.

The personalized and individual learning environment at LSC allowed me to build a strong academic foundation while receiving support and attention from my professors. I was able to ask questions, develop a deeper understanding of difficult concepts, and become confident in my ability to succeed academically. Those skills have become incredibly valuable now that I am in medical school, where I am expected to learn and master a tremendous amount of material.

LSC also taught me how important it is to take ownership of my education while knowing that I had people in my corner who genuinely wanted me to succeed. Looking back, I am grateful that my path began at LSC. The individual attention, supportive environment, and strong academic foundation I received there helped prepare me not only for the challenges of medical school, but for the career in medicine I am working toward today.

If I could give one piece of advice to someone considering their educational path, especially someone interested in a competitive career like medicine, it would be to never underestimate the value of a community college. LSC was an important part of my journey to medical school, and I will always have a special place in my heart for the school and the people who supported me there.

One of the things that made LSC so valuable to me was the support. Being a pre-med student can be challenging, and having professors and staff who know you, encourage you, and genuinely want to see you succeed can make an enormous difference. At LSC, I never felt like I was just another student. I felt like people were cheering me on every step of the way.

Affordability was another major advantage. As an international student, keeping the cost of my education manageable was especially important. Choosing LSC allowed me to save thousands of dollars while receiving an education that prepared me to continue on to my next step. That financial decision had a meaningful impact on my overall educational journey.

But perhaps what I value most is the community. LSC became more than just a place where I took classes. It became a school that felt close to my heart. The relationships I built and the support I received are things I still remember as I begin medical school today.

I am incredibly grateful that LSC was part of my journey. My acceptance to medical school is something I am proud of, but I also recognize that getting there was a series of steps, and LSC was an important step in that journey. For anyone considering community college, I would strongly encourage you to consider LSC. You can receive an excellent education, save money, find people who genuinely support you, and build the foundation for whatever comes next.
