LSC Foundation to Award over $100,000 in Student Scholarships for 2020
(Duluth, Minn.) – The Lake Superior College Foundation will once again award over $100,000 in student scholarships this spring. The awards will then be applied to students’ accounts in Fall Semester 2020.

The annual LSC Foundation scholarship application window will open on Monday, February 10, and will remain open until Friday, February 28. All returning and prospective LSC students are encouraged to apply by visiting www.lsc.edu/foundation. The entire application process is online and applicants simply need to setup an account in the AwardSpring system, which they can access beginning on February 10. LSC Foundation scholarships are available to both current (returning) and incoming students in good standing, and will be awarded to students enrolled at LSC in Fall Semester 2020.

There are several program-specific scholarships as well as dozens of general scholarships open to all returning and new students. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $2,500. Any student who plans on attending classes at LSC in the fall of 2020 is eligible to apply, although some scholarships do have specific requirements based on conditions established by the funders of the scholarship.

In addition to the traditional scholarships for returning and incoming students, Lake Superior College Foundation is once again offering several scholarships specifically for graduating high school seniors in the greater Twin Ports region who plan to attend Lake Superior College in the fall. These high school specific scholarships are for $2,000 each and will be split into two $1,000 awards to be applied in Fall Semester 2020 and again in Spring Semester of 2021 – they can be adjusted for programs that can be completed in a year or less. High school seniors do not need to be accepted at Lake Superior College yet in order to be eligible to apply, however the scholarships can only be awarded to Lake Superior College students in good standing once fall semester is underway. Awards are typically applied to student accounts after the final day to add/drop classes.

LSC Foundation will also once again be offering up to thirteen St. Louis County Mineral Royalties Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each. This is open to residents of St. Louis County who have or will soon be graduating from any high school throughout the county and plan on attending Lake Superior College to pursue an in-demand career track. This funding is made possible thanks to the generous support and approval of the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners. There will be several new scholarships offered this year as well, including in firefighting, healthcare, integrated manufacturing and liberal arts. Once applicants begin the online application process, the system automatically informs applicants which scholarships they may be eligible to receive.

While the LSC Foundation awards scholarships throughout the year, this spring application window is the largest annual one-time application and distribution of funds.

“Last year was the most successful year in the history of LSC Foundation both in terms of funds raised as fund distributed,” said Daniel Fanning, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and External Relations at Lake Superior College. “Thanks to ongoing generosity of our community, we are able to offer even more scholarships opportunities for our students this year. We are grateful for the strong support from our expanding donor base who are willing to invest in our students because they realize LSC graduates are the future workforce and future leaders of our region. The application process is intentionally accessible and convenient, as we encourage anyone who is planning on, or even considering, attending LSC in the fall to apply.”

The LSC Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, largely made up of volunteer members of the LSC Board of Directors, will review applications the week of March 2. The final list of recommended scholarship recipients will be presented to the full LSC Foundation Board of Directors for approval at the Board’s regular meeting the week of March 9. All scholarship recipients will be notified in mid-March, primarily through the AwardSpring dashboard as well as through email. The LSC Foundation will celebrate the recipients at an informal Scholarship Reception at 2 pm on April 8, in the LSC Commons.
