Suspension is what happens if a student who was previously placed on warning or probation did not meet the terms of that status. All students must maintain a minimum cumulative (total) GPA of 2.0 and 66.66% completion rate.
For more information about academic suspension at Lake Superior College, please visit the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) webpage.
Students who are suspended are able to ask that their suspension end early due to extenuating circumstances.
A student can have an academic suspension only, a financial aid suspension only, or financial aid suspension due to 150% maximum timeframe. Students may have both academic and financial aid suspensions simultaneously. The Suspension Appeal form is used for all suspension types, and the student will check the category or categories that apply in their own situation.
The Suspension Appeal form can be found at lsc.edu/records.
When students are placed on academic warning, the policy indicates that they have one semester to return to good standing. It is possible to do well in classes and still get suspended if your cumulative GPA and completion rate did not return to 2.0 and 66.66%. If you were placed on academic warning or probation and completed 100% of your classes with a 2.5 GPA, you are eligible for an "Auto Waiver" and can enroll in the next semester after completing an Academic Success Plan. If you had pre-registered for a future term, your courses will not be dropped.
If you are a student who was previously on academic warning and was academically suspended but completed 100% of your courses with at least a 2.5 GPA, you qualify for an Auto Waiver and can continue to take classes. You must submit an Academic Success Plan by the deadline you were given. If you were pre-registered for classes for a future term, you were not dropped from your classes.
Extenuating circumstances include significant student illness, death of a family member, unexpected military activation, jury duty, etc., that is beyond the student’s control.
A personal statement or description from the student can help explain the situation, but it is not documentation. Documentation is verification of an event’s occurrence by a neutral third party such as a medical provider, court, police report, social worker, news article, obituary, etc.
In some instances, a letter of recommendation from an employer, instructor, academic advisor, clergy person, or social worker can be helpful for academic suspensions. Contact information from the letter writer must be provided for verification. Letters of recommendation alone are typically not enough documentation for financial aid appeals. However, letters of recommendation from parents/relatives or friends will not be accepted.
Suspension appeals must be submitted with supporting documentation that specifically relates to the reason for the submitted appeal. The timeframe of the documentation must match the dates of the term(s) the student was enrolled. NOTE: Medical documentation MUST be submitted by the healthcare professional directly to LSC; medical documentation submitted by the students themselves will not be accepted. Students should give the Health Care Provider form directly to the healthcare provider and ask them to fill it out and fax it back to LSC. Please do NOT ask your provider to fax over your entire medical record; we only want the completed form. Other forms of documentation may be submitted from students.
The deadline to submit an academic appeal is 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday prior to the start of the semester.
Financial aid appeals can be turned in throughout the semester.
Students with approved appeals are required to complete an Academic Success Plan. If it is for the first suspension, the form alone is all that is needed. However, two or more suspensions require a meeting with an academic advisor. Students will be notified which option they need to complete. After the Academic Success Plan is completed, students can register for classes provided there are no additional holds on their account.
Academic Success Plans must be completed by 4:30 p.m. on the Friday before the semester starts.
The Academic Success Plan can be found at lsc.edu/records.

If a student's Academic and/or Financial Aid Suspension Appeal is denied, A Request to Reconsider form can be submitted; students will receive this form via e-mail upon notification of a denied Academic and/or Financial Aid Suspension Appeal. The Request to Reconsider form is reviewed by one or both of the College’s Vice Presidents depending on the request being made. The decision of the Vice President(s) is final and binding; there is no additional route of appeal beyond this.
New or additional supporting documentation is required to be provided with the form for consideration. Again, medical documentation must come directly from the provider.
The Request to Reconsider form is a final opportunity for a student to submit additional documentation that was missing from the original Suspension Appeal form. If a student misses the deadline for additional documentation, this would be their final chance to submit it for consideration.
