Defining good academic standing and academic policies at Lake Superior College for PSEO students!
Good Academic Standing
Lake Superior College requires that students are making satisfactory academic progress towards a degree, diploma or certificate to remain in good academic standing.
PSEO check-in: This would include completing courses and making progress towards high school graduation requirements.
There are two criteria for ensuring students are in good academic standing: cumulative GPA and cumulative completion percentage.
All students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. All earned credits are included in the calculations. Grades of A, B, C, D, F and FN will be included in the GPA calculation. Withdrawals do not impact cumulative GPA.
All students are also required to complete a minimum of 66.66% of all registered credits. Grades of F, FN, and W will negatively impact the completion percentage
PSEO check-in: College in the Schools courses through Lake Superior College are also calculated in academic standing.
Academic Warning
If a student goes below a 2.0 cumulative GPA or 66.66% cumulative completion rate at the end of a semester, they will be placed on Academic Warning for their next semester.
PSEO check-in: Typically, low grades in courses and withdrawals are the biggest impacts on good academic standing.
On academic warning, students can enroll in classes for future semesters. However, they will have one semester on warning to get their cumulative GPA at or above 2.0 and their cumulative completion rate at or above 66.66%. If they meet these standards they will be back to good academic standing.
PSEO check-in: Students on warning should check-in with their high school counselor to ensure high school requirements are still being met!
Academic Suspension
Students who maintain a low completion percentage or GPA after their first semester may be placed on academic suspension.
An academic suspension means the student will be removed from future classes and required to sit-out a specific period before being eligible to return.
The first academic suspension will result in a one semester sit-out, where a second or subsequent suspension will result in a year-long sit-out period.
An academic suspension results in a sit-out period. After which students need to complete an academic success plan prior to re-enrolling.
If a student wants to return earlier than their sit-out, they can complete a suspension appeal form with documentation as to why they should be reinstated at a sooner date.
PSEO check-in: A conversation between the student and their high school counselor should happen to check if PSEO courses are still meeting high school graduation requirements.
Academic Probation
After an academic suspension, a student will need to complete a few steps to return as a student on academic probation:
- Sit-out their one semester/one year or complete an academic appeal
- Complete an Academic Success Plan with their academic advisor
- This plan also indicates students must have a semester GPA of 2.5 or higher and complete 100% of enrolled classes to continue in future semesters
Academic probation is a return to courses with the intended goal of helping the student achieve good academic standing.
To stay enrolled at LSC, students on academic probation will need to earn a 2.5 GPA and complete all classes every semester until they are back to good academic standing.
PSEO check-in: Students with an academic suspension should check they are collegeready and evaluate remaining high school graduation requirements.
PSEO check-in:
- Ask your PSEO advisor about future implications for Financial Aid after an Academic Warning, Suspension, or Probation!
- Your academic standing stays with you after PSEO.
- An LSC Academic Suspension may transfer over to another school depending on their policies.
