While I was at LSC, I participated in the Inside Out Program. This fundamentally shifted my values and beliefs and changed the trajectory of my career. When I began at LSC I was going to be a veterinary technician- after the program I applied to continue my education on a Social Work path. I later completed an internship in a correctional setting, something I hadn't previously considered doing. I also obtained my master's degree graduating with honors thanks to the solid foundation provided to me at LSC. I reflect often on how the Inside Out program challenged societal perceptions of crime and criminals. It helped to humanize justice issues for me and sparked my desire to be a part of positive change in the criminal legal system. I also met my husband at LSC, which is the cherry on top.
I struggled throughout high school and when I did decide to return to college, LSC was the clear choice. I liked the small class sizes and ability to develop personal relationships with instructors. This also enabled me to form deeper relationships with classmates as a person that struggled internally with socialization. At one point I was doing very poorly in my classes and had to be put on academic suspension. This helped my growth trajectory as well because it supported deep reflection and change within me. I was accepted back and successfully completed my AA degree. I participated in the LSC Choir and enjoyed that creative outlet immensely. My mother passed away during my time at LSC and the choir director dedicated a song to her during our final concert. I felt so wrapped in care and support and I will never forget how the staff at LSC made me feel. Forever grateful.
I currently work with youth who have had law enforcement interaction in a diversion program. We create space for young people to receive support and accountability for harm they have caused in community and hopefully healing for those who they have caused harm to. By completing our program, youth avoid criminal charges which fundamentally changes their future and supports their participation in our community with the hopes that they may reach their full potential.
