On Call “Final”: LSC Fire Fighting and EMT Students to Work 12-Hour Fire Department Simulation

WHO:  Thirty firefighting and EMT students who are enrolled in Lake Superior College’s public safety programs along with ten faculty/professional fire fighters throughout the day. The students will be on call for a 12-hour shift. Second-year firefighting students will serve in officer roles for the crews. Two ambulances and three fire trucks will also be on the ready.

WHAT:  It might be a medical call. It could be a house fire. The crew needs to be fed. The firefighting and EMT students at Lake Superior College’s Emergency Response Training will work a 12-hour shift in a simulated busy fire department, putting their skills to test. Scenarios will include structure fires, car and dumpster fires, medicals, hazardous materials and technical rescue, including crew practice driving rigs getting to the fire scene. Students who stay and work the entire 12-hour shift will get extra credit for their grade total. The student Fire Fighters Club will cook and feed the crews.

Lake Superior College provides fire technology education, EMT training and continuing education/ customized training for fire and rescue departments.

WHEN: Monday, May 7, a 12-hour shift, starting at 10 a.m. to 10 p.m./Major burn activities to start after 12 noon

WHERE: Lake Superior College’s Emergency Response Training Center, 11501 Highway 23, Duluth, 55808/Park at main building, meet in lobby and wait for escort to burn area

WHY: “Even though a regular fire department shift is 24 hours on and 48 hours off, this gives our students a taste of how a shift might go,” said ERTC Interim Executive Director Joe Tribbey who is also a captain at Station 2 in Superior’s North End. “This day is a culmination of all their training. We’ve set up an intercom system to dispatch 911 calls to the waiting student crews. They won’t know what the scenario is until they hear it and have to react.”
