Lake Superior College (LSC) will host the Hooked on Machining High School Fish Mold Tournament on Friday, May 22, at the Boulder Lake Reservoir Public Access. The event will begin at 10 a.m., with awards scheduled from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
Three high schools are scheduled to take part with around 40 participants competing. What makes this fishing tournament unique was that the bait that will be used on Friday was designed by the students themselves in coordination with Lake Superior College's Integrated Manufacturing programs.
Students used computer-aided design (SolidWorks) and computer-aided manufacturing to CNC programming to design and manufacture the best bait for the tournament. This type of event connects hands-on learning, technical skills and outdoor recreation in a fun, team-based setting.
Fishing categories will include biggest fish by species, including northern pike, walleye, perch, panfish and bass, along with an award for smallest fish of any species. The tournament is catch and release, and all fish will be measured and weighed by tournament judges. Boats, kayaks, waders and live bait will not be allowed.
LSC would like to thank the following supporters. Perkins, Marine General, Costco Wholesale, Fisherman’s Corner, Epicurean, Northwest Outlet, Patriot Bait Molds, Paulsen’s Quick Strike Charter Fishing and OSG Corporation.
