Policy 4.8 - Emeritus Status

Minnesota State Policy

Part 1: Purpose

Emeritus status is an honor bestowed by the Lake Superior College President to recognize an employee’s meritorious service to Lake Superior College upon retirement.

Part 2: Criteria

Emeritus status will be considered based on a combination of the following factors:

  1. Must be retired or retiring;
  2. Significant contributions to their field;
  3. Dedication to the institution and to education;
  4. Significant participation in campus life;
  5. Outstanding service to the community;
  6. Esteem of students and colleagues.

Part 3: Process

Emeritus status nominations shall be submitted in writing. The nomination process is open to any member of the college community. The college’s President’s Cabinet will review the criteria, the employees’ contributions to the college and make a recommendation to the President. Nominated individuals awarded Emeritus status will also be recognized at an annual Employee Appreciation Day.

Part 4: Responsibility of Recipients of Emeritus Status

Emeritus employees are expected to continue to positively represent the college to the community and professional colleagues and support the college in their areas of competence, particularly in an advisory capacity.

Part 5: Authority

The President may confer emeritus status upon an employee who is retiring or has retired from employment with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system based on Part 4 of the Minnesota State College and University Board Policy 4.8 Emeritus Status.
