Students Win Gold at State SkillsUSA Competition

Congratulations! The Integrated Manufacturing SkillsUSA Club recently attended the SkillsUSA Minnesota Championships in Bloomington where they came away with the top gold medal.

In 1st place for Community Service: Kathleen Crooks, Michael Decaprio, and Nicole Okstad.

The “A Soldier’s Love” sculpture is a community service project that was created by this team of students to help veterans by raising funds for assistance dogs.

Inspired by a photo of a veteran with his dogs, the piece is designed by LSC alum Spencer Wilenius. The Integrated Manufacturing team put more than 100 hours into making the pieces, starting with the plasma cutting, cleaning, welding, and painting of the steel and finishing the pieces by installing the backlighting. The 23×30-inch sculptures are designed to be wall-mounted. They are available for purchase for $125 through Kathleen Crooks, 218/565-8490. All funds raised will go to PetsLoyal2Vets.

3rd place – Welding Sculpture Art Matt Gildner

“The students did a fantastic job representing Lake Superior College, themselves, and their programs, ” said faculty member Max Udovich. “We are proud of their accomplishments and hard work leading up to this formal recognition on a state level.” The Community Service Team will move on to compete at the SkillsUSA Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky June 19-23.
