LSC Foundation to Award over $100,000 in Student Scholarships for 2018

The annual scholarship application window opens this Friday, February 9, and will remain open until March 1. Current and prospective LSC students are encouraged to apply by visiting www.lsc.edu/foundation. There are several program-specific scholarships as well as dozens of general scholarships open to all current and incoming students. Scholarships range from $500 to $2,500.

In addition to the nearly $75,000 in traditional scholarships for current and incoming students, Lake Superior College Foundation recently established funding for scholarships specifically for graduating high school students in the greater Duluth area who plan to attend Lake Superior College in the fall following their high school graduation. Two $2,000 scholarships will be offered at each of the selected ten nearby high schools: Duluth Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City, Duluth Marshall, Hermantown, Proctor, Esko, Cloquet, Superior and Two Harbors. Most scholarships will be split into two $1,000 awards over two semesters, and can be adjusted for programs that can be completed in less than a year. If a student does not return to LSC for a second semester, the remainder of the scholarship will be returned to the LSC Foundation Scholarship Fund and awarded the following scholarship cycle. High school seniors do not need to be accepted at Lake Superior College yet in order to be eligible to apply, however the scholarships can only be applied to Lake Superior College.

“We are fortunate to have many generous donors, as well as community and industry partners, who are willing to invest in our students because they realize they are the future workforce of our community,” said Daniel Fanning, Executive Director of LSC Foundation. “Enrollment at LSC is currently higher than it’s been in nearly a decade, and with increased enrollment comes increased requests for support from our students. That’s why we are striving to increase our scholarship offerings. We encourage anyone who is considering attending or returning to LSC to apply. It’s a fairly simple, automatic application process. Once you put in your basic information and answer three essay questions, the system automatically determines which scholarships students may be eligible to receive. We want it to be as simple as possible so we can help support as many students as possible.”

The LSC Foundation Scholarship Review Committee will review applications the week of March 5. Once the final list of scholarship recipients is approved by the LSC Foundation Board of Directors, scholarship recipients will be notified in mid-March. LSC Foundation will celebrate the recipients at an informal Scholarship Reception the afternoon of Thursday, March 21. The following week, on March 29, LSC Foundation will host their annual Vine & Dine Scholarship Gala, the Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year. The goal is to raise enough money to be able to offer scholarships twice a year and continue to increase the amount of funds being offered.
