Lake Superior College teams up with local dentists to provide free dental service for children on Give Kids a Smile Day

Concerned about the growing number of children who are unable to access affordable dental care, Lake Superior College’s Dental Hygiene Clinic is teaming up with dental professionals, including six volunteer dentists, to provide free care on Friday, February 7, for children whose families might not otherwise be able to afford it.

Last year, the clinic served more than 42 children. “We want to reach children in need of dental care," said Kjersta Watt, LSC dental hygiene program director. "We encourage parents to call for an appointment.”

The Dental Hygiene Clinic is located at Lake Superior College, 2101 Trinity Road, in Duluth. Openings are available for any child under 18 years old who needs dental care. Those interested in scheduling an appointment between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, February 7 may call (218) 733-5939. Please note that walk-in care is not available as the openings typically fill up in advance.

Patients should be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Information on specific services will be outlined when an appointment is scheduled.

The “Give Kids a Smile” program is a statewide outreach effort coordinated by the Minnesota Dental Association whose members are committed to providing all children with dental care and improving access to care throughout Minnesota. Now in its 18th year, Give Kids a Smile Day has provided free dental care to more than 60,000 children. About 200 clinics across the state will open their doors for this program.

The Minnesota Dental Association is the voice of dentistry in Minnesota, representing 83 percent of practicing dentists. It is committed to the highest standards of oral health and access to care for all Minnesotans.
