Lake Superior College Mourns The Loss of Assistant Soccer Coach Tony Makela

It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the loss of a member of the Lake Superior College campus community and LSC Athletics family. Anthony (Tony) Louis Makela III, 30 years old, was killed in an automobile accident on the morning of Sunday, September 13. Tony was hired as the assistant coach of the LSC men’s soccer team prior to the 2019 season and helped guide the IceHawks into the NJCAA Regional Playoffs in his first season. Tony, head coach Anthony Wood, and the team were planning to build off the positive momentum from last season this year, prior to the league canceling the fall season due to COVID-19. Even though the IceHawks’ season was postponed at least until spring, and possibly canceled, Tony was still actively reaching out to student-athletes to ensure they remained successfully engaged in school and were staying physically active. He will be missed by many. Head Coach Anthony Wood said it well: “We lost not only a coach, but a friend and mentor to our student-athletes.”

Lake Superior College officials have been in contact with Tony’s family, who are requesting privacy at this time, and the team is planning a private and socially-distanced gathering to honor their coach in the near future.
