Lake Superior College Athletics Update, Fall 2021

Lake Superior College is excited to announce the return of LSC Athletics for Fall Semester 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic sidelined most athletics during the 2020/2021 academic year, with the only exception being Coed Clay Target. The IceHawks are ready to return to their winning ways this fall and will be offering the following Division III varsity athletic opportunities.

LSC Coed Clay Target:
Lake Superior College's coed clay target team was the only athletic team allowed to compete last year, as they were able to do so virtually and participate through contactless shooting and competition. The IceHawks clinched their division championship for the fourth year in a row. The four top female shooters in the conference were all LSC IceHawks and two of the top ten men were also from Lake Superior College. Coach Pappas and the 'Hawks look to defend their championship and make it five years in a row this upcoming fall. If you're interested in learning more and/or joining the team, please contact Coach George Pappas at [email protected] or [email protected].

LSC Men's and Women's Soccer:
Both  the men's and women's soccer teams were sidelined last year due to the pandemic, but are excited to take the field again this upcoming fall. Returning men's head coach Anthony Wood and returning women's head coach Caitlyn Wood are excited about several new signings over the past few months and expect to field competitive teams this fall. The schedule will be released mid-July and practices will begin soon after. If you're interested in joining the team, please contact [email protected][email protected] and/or [email protected]

LSC Coed Cycling:
The LSC Coed cycling team is also excited to resume riding, after missing last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions. Coming off a successful 2019 season, where several members of the team competed at the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Big Bear Lake, California, the IceHawks are excited to resume riding this fall. Anyone interested in learning more and joining the team are encouraged to reach out to head coach Greg Daw at [email protected] and/or [email protected].

Please join us in helping cheer on the IceHawks this fall in clay target, soccer and cycling! #GoIceHawks

While LSC had previously offered men's and women's basketball, the program will not be offered in the Fall of 2021 as we continue to explore options for the future of IceHawks basketball and the possibility of securing a home court in order to successfully continue the program. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related travel restrictions, basketball was not offered in 2020. The pandemic only added to the complexity and rising costs of sharing courts with other nearby schools, and it became increasingly difficult and expensive to offer basketball unless/until LSC is able to secure a home court. Since the basketball program was launched four years ago, it was always the ideal goal to seek funding for a nearby athletics facility. That was based on another facilities project moving forward, moving LSC's downtown manufacturing campus back to the main campus. That was LSC's primary legislative bonding request during the 2019 legislative session. Heading into the session, LSC and Minnesota State were in a strong position to receive planning funding to begin that project. We had built bipartisan support, as well as strong community support. However, once the legislative session got underway everything changed with both the pandemic as well as the evolving situation related to the death of George Floyd. Priorities changed quickly at the Capitol and few Minnesota State projects received funding including LSC's request. That essentially pushes that project back at least two more years, if not more, which in turns make it that much more difficult to also move forward with even potential plans for a gymnasium. We have been in conversations with potential donors who may be interested in exploring possibilities, but not until more economic recovery  and stability occurs. Therefore, we simply don't know the future of IceHawks basketball at this time. We loved offering the program and would love to see it back at LSC in the near future, but right now there are more questions than answers as we would need a viable economic and facilities plan in order to offer basketball again. We are very grateful for the work of Coach Tolo, Coach Johnson and Coach Homere to help successfully launch the basketball programs here at LSC, as well as for all student-athletes who participated over the past few years. Once an IceHawk, always an IceHawk.
