Black History Month
February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of the achievements and contributions of African Americans and their powerful role of shaping U.S. history. This year is extra important as it marks the 100th year of national efforts to celebrate and study Black history. In 1926, after spending time in Chicago celebrating the 50th anniversary of emancipation, Dr. Carter Woodson formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in an effort for young Black Americans to be taught more of their heritage and about the achievements of their ancestors. The theme for this year’s celebration is “A Century of Black History Commemorations.”

Too Young, Too Old, or Just Right?! Rewriting the Script on Aging.
Date, Time, Location: Wednesday, March 4th, 12-1pm, CEI
Spoiler alert: aging isn’t something that happens “later”—it’s happening now. And we’re in the midst of a longevity revolution- research shows that half of today’s 5-year-olds will live to be 100. Yet, our beliefs about aging, social institutions, economic policies and social norms need to evolve to accommodate this new age of aging.
This lively session invites us to unpack the myths and messages we absorb about age every day. Ageism- the prejudice, discrimination, or stereotyping because of someone’s age- affects all age groups but often targets older adults.
