Students who pursue a Distinction in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will have the opportunity to participate in supported activities designed to help them understand and actively engage at the personal, community, and global level with issues surrounding DEI issues. Students will become change agents who have the knowledge and skills to be able to help remove the historic obstacles that stand in the way of underrepresented and under-served groups.
Definition of Diversity
“The range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.” (Diversity definition from Ferris State)

“The fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups.” (Equity definition from Independent Sector)
Definition of Inclusion
“Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive university promotes and sustains a sense of belonging; it values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of living of its members.” (Inclusion definition from Ferris State)

Semester One: Fall 2019
Participate in 10 hours of events tied to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
- Volunteerism
- Approved on-campus or off-campus activities
Successfully complete DSTC 1999: Distinction in DEI, a one-credit online class focused on self-exploration and analysis of societal issues
Semester Two: Spring 2020
- Earn a C or better in one approved, three-credit DEI-focused course.
- Successfully complete the one-credit online Distinction Capstone (includes written reflection, ePortfolio, and presentation)
