The Petition is the first step in seeking an exception to certain policies and/or procedures due to extenuating circumstances. All submitted petitions are considered on a case-by-case basis. Not all petitions submitted are approved, as the merits of the documentation and the circumstances are evaluated by the decision maker(s).

When filling out a petition, please be specific! For instance, if your petition refers to a particular class (for example to late add or withdraw after the deadline), be sure to let us know exactly what class you’re referring to rather than indicating merely “this class.” We don’t want to make assumptions and be wrong.

The Petition to Policy form can be found online at lsc.edu/records.

Extenuating circumstances include significant student illness, death of a family member, unexpected military activation, jury duty, etc., that is beyond the student's control.

A personal statement or description from the student can help explain the situation, but it is not documentation. Documentation is verification of an event’s occurrence by a neutral third party such as a medical provider, court, police report, social worker, obituary, news article, etc.

Petitions must be submitted with supporting documentation that specifically relates to the reason for the submitted petition. The timeframe of the documentation must match the dates of the term(s) the student was enrolled. NOTE: Medical documentation MUST be submitted by the healthcare professional directly to LSC; medical documentation submitted by the students themselves will not be accepted. Please give the Health Care Provider form to your healthcare provider and ask them to fill it out and fax it back to us. Please do NOT ask your provider to fax your entire medical record; we only want the completed form. Non-medical documentation may be submitted from students.

The Petition Appeal can be submitted if the original Petition is denied. The appeal is reviewed by one or both of Lake Superior College’s Vice Presidents depending on the request being made. The decision of the Vice President(s) is final and binding; there is no additional route of appeal beyond this.

New or additional supporting documentation is required to be provided for consideration. Again, medical documentation must come directly from the provider.

Documentation is verification of an event’s occurrence by a neutral third party such as a medical provider, court, police report, social worker, obituary, news article, etc. A personal statement, narrative, or description is not documentation.

Documentation of extenuating circumstances includes prolonged illness, death of a family member, jury duty, unexpected military activation, or other situation that is outside of the student's control.

All non-medical documentation can be emailed to or faxed to our Records office at . Medical documentation MUST come directly from the provider's office; medical information submitted by students will NOT be accepted.

If you submit a “current student” BP Logix petition form, you will be notified via email from BP Logix about the decision on your petition. If you submit a “non-current student” BP Logix form, you will receive separate email notifications from the Registrar’s Office. If you have issues accessing the “current student” petition form, you should use the “non-current student” form instead.

Submitted paper Petition Appeals will be notified of their decision via email.

The committee members meet weekly to evaluate all complete petitions. Students should hear the results of their completed petition requests within 10 business days. Incomplete petitions may be held for additional documentation. Typically, students will have up to 2 – 3 weeks to get all documentation submitted for review.

You can reach out to us via email at or call and ask for the Records Department.
