Lake Superior College will once again host free career exploration academies and camps for youth in June of 2018. Campers will have the opportunity to learn about careers in aviation, healthcare, manufacturing, firefighting, cybersecurity and more through hands-on activities, field trips, and interaction with professionals in the field. Lunch and snacks are included.
These camps are made possible, and offered free of cost to community members, thanks to community partnerships and generous donations from industry partners, as well as in collaboration with the Lake Superior College Foundation.
Aviation Camp -A summer camp for youth, ages 13-17, who are interested in learning more about aviation and aerospace careers. Two cohorts include a coed group and an all-female group. Students will have a chance to operate a flight simulator and experience a Discovery Flight in LSC’s aircraft. Professionals in the aviation industry will talk about career opportunities. Tours of local aviation partners, and the 148th Air National Guard Airbase are also planned.
Robotics Academy – Build a working robot! Campers, ages 13-17, will work in teams at Lake Superior College’s Downtown Center to assemble robots, using kits and onsite manufacturing tools and equipment. Guest speakers will talk about jobs in manufacturing and educational pathways.
Fire Fighting Academy — Ever wonder what it would be like to live in the boots of a firefighter? Students, ages 14-19, will explore career opportunities in the emergency medical, safety and rescue fields. An introduction to fire fighting attack, safety and survival will include hose-lines, ladders, ventilation, forcible entry, auto extrication, high angle rescue, search and rescue and CPR. Students will have an opportunity to visit multiple firehouses during the week.
Scrubs Camp – Students will spend two days exploring a variety of healthcare careers including nursing, laboratory science, social work and many others. Students will experience these career areas through field trips and hands-on activities facilitated by healthcare professionals and college faculty. Students will be provided their own scrubs to wear. Any student entering grades 6–8 by fall of 2018 is eligible.
Wellness and Survival Camp – This camp introduces students to health and wellness awareness and career opportunities. Students, ages 13-17, will learn to how to live a healthy life through physical fitness, vital sign reading, nutrition, relaxation techniques, massage therapy and wilderness survival training.
CyberCamps – Introductory GenCyber and Advanced GenCyber are camps for students in grades 7-12. GenCyber camps are part of a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and National Security Agency to encourage youth to pursue cyber careers that are key to the cyber defense of the United States.
Introductory GenCyber Camp – Campers in grades 7-12 will receive an overview on computer hardware and troubleshooting, networking, programming, social and personal computer security and cybersecurity careers.
Advanced GenCyber Camp – For students in grades 7–12 who have completed Intro to GenCyber or have other prior experience. These academies are part of a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and National Security Agency to encourage youth to pursue cyber careers that are key to the cyber defense of the country.
