Placement numbers are calculated based on student supplied information collected by the MLT program and Lake Superior College within 6 months to one year after graduation. This information only includes students who responded to inquiries or surveys and who reported as having taken a job as an MLT or in a related field. Students who chose employment outside the field are counted as not employed “in field”. NAACLS supplied formulas are used for this determination.

The Medical Laboratory Technician program serves our students and our community by providing high quality educational experiences that prepare students for a successful career in the field of medical laboratory science.

The Medical Laboratory Technician program will meet the work force demands for laboratory professionals by anticipating the needs for innovative education, program development, and by empowering our students to become leaders in their field.

Program Goals
To fulfill the mission and vision of the Medical Laboratory Technician program and Lake Superior College, the Medical Laboratory Technician program will:
- Provide a broad occupational education by using a variety of resources and experiences which prepare students to become Medical Laboratory Technicians with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.
- Coordinate the course of study to provide development and general education opportunities which support entry-level literacy, including the ability to articulate and communicate ideas and problem solve.
- Provide a supportive learning environment and offer equal opportunities for all people without regard to their race, creed, color, gender, sexual preference, national origin, age, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, religion or disability.
- Maintain a high level and quality of instruction while incorporating flexible, innovative teaching techniques including the latest in technological advances.
- Provide responsive student services including advisement and referral services. To commit to the development of competent entry-level Medical Laboratory Technicians.
- Develop in students the professional attitudes and ethics required of Medical Laboratory Technicians.
- Support life-long learning and self-development, including critical thinking skills.
- Educate students in the merits of continuing professional education.
- Collaborate with business organizations, industry and other higher education institutions for professional opportunities.
- Commit to an on-going program improvement and development through a system of self-study and assessment.
- Demonstrate accountability to students and governing agencies.
Program Graduate Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Technician program the student will be able to:
- Comply with laboratory safety and compliance procedures and policies.
- Describe principles, operations, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Demonstrate preparedness for entry level employment as an MLT including professional behavior, and effective communication skills.
- Correlate laboratory findings to common disease processes.
- Demonstrate standard specimen collection and processing practices employed in medical laboratory professions.
- Identify pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical variables that affect test accuracy and take appropriate action.
- Perform mathematical functions as required by laboratory procedures.
- Perform a variety of diagnostic and screening tests procedures according to standard operating procedures.
- Relate basic discipline principles (Hematologic, chemical, immunologic, etc.) to laboratory test procedures and test results.
