Lake Superior College (LSC) is mourning the passing of former longtime college president Dr. Kathleen Nelson on July 31, 2025.
Dr. Nelson served as LSC President from 1997-2010. She was the second president following the merger of Duluth Technical College and Duluth Community College in 1995. Under her leadership, Lake Superior College’s enrollment nearly doubled, becoming a leader in online learning. By 2009, 27 percent of LSC students were learning online. The main campus also expanded with the addition of the S Building. Prior to her retirement in 2010, Dr. Nelson helped secure funding for the addition of the Health and Science Building.

“President Nelson was a visionary leader whose dedication and service left a lasting impact on our institution and the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff,” said Dr. Linda Kingston, current Lake Superior College president. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her leadership and kindness.”
Dr. Nelson served in senior leadership positions at community and technical colleges for most of her 40-year higher education career. Following her retirement from LSC, she consulted with the Higher Learning Commission on accreditation issues. In 2019 and 2021 she served as the Interim President at Glenville State University (W.Va.) and Pierpont Community and Technical College (W.Va.).
Our condolences go out to the Nelson Family.
