What is TRIO?

TRIO programs were the first national access and retention programs to address social and cultural barriers to education in America. The programs are designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and help them succeed. TRIO began as a part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and the program that would evolve into Student Support Services was launched in 1968. The Lake Superior College TRIO SSS program has served students for over 20 years and continues to work towards increasing college retention and graduation rates for its participants.
