Why Study Medication Aide Training at LSC?

This Medication Aide course is designed to train unlicensed personnel to administer medication in a variety of health care settings. The course meets the curriculum standards established by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for the training to become a Medication Aide.

Students will study the legal requirements, safety measures, terminology, body systems, and the use of references related to the administration of medication. Students will study actions, dosages, toxic symptoms and special considerations of commonly prescribed medications. Students will also study and practice the administration of oral, topical, optic, ophthalmic and rectal forms of medication in a lab setting.

Program Participation Requirements

People take this course to satisfy the requirements needed to work as a medication aide in a skilled nursing facility in Minnesota. However, this course is open to everyone who wants to learn more about how to safely administer medication.

If the course is being taken to fulfill a work requirement, it is recommended that a person works as a certified nursing assistant for six months before taking this course and be at least 18 years of age.

To work as a medication aide in a skilled nursing facility, a person must have completed a nursing assistant training program approved by the Minnesota Department of Health before enrollment in a medication aide training program.

The skilled nursing facility that employs the medication aide is responsible for documenting the completion of an approved nursing assistant training program and completion of the medication aide training.

A med pass kit, and two textbooks are included in the course cost. All items will be mailed to you; please be sure to enter your correct mailing address for the textbooks and course supplies when you register.

Program Features

Online Course Expectations:

This is an online instructor led course. There will be weekly online activities and exams with mandatory due dates that will be the responsibility of the student to complete on their own. Students should allocate at least 12-15 hours per week to complete assignments. The course will be facilitated through a combination of these programs: Zoom and D2L. Additionally, mandatory weekly Zoom meetings will be led by the instructor for weekly skill sign-offs and exams.

College Credit:

Our Medication Aide course qualifies you to receive two (2) college credits.
