    Opportunities at Lake Superior College

    Our accounting program offers two different career options for students.

    Bookkeeper: This 30-credit certificate program prepares students for work as a professional bookkeeper. A professional bookkeeper is responsible for an organization’s financial records. They will track and tabulate expenditures, receipts, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses. Bookkeepers can prepare financial statements and individual income tax returns.

    Accountant: This 61-credit Associate in Applied Science Degree program trains students in the preparation of financial statements, budget analysis, managerial accounting, income tax applications and payroll accounting.

    We have excellent articulations agreements in place with various colleges and universities that allow you to transfer most (if not all) of your credits earned in our program, should you decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Many of LSC’s accounting program’s classes are offered on-site and all of the accounting program’s classes are offered online, making it a great fit for motivated students who have computer skills and feel they can communicate well through reading and writing. This program is ideal for people with busy schedules because class work can be completed at any time, day or night.

    What are the outcomes?

    Upon successful completion of the A.A.S. in accounting, the student:
    • Should be well-prepared to sit for the Accredited Business Accountant exam which is administered by the Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation (not a requirement of the program)
    • Can enter the job market in entry level accounting positions
    • Could transfer most (if not all) of their credits to a college offering a bachelor’s degree in accounting

    Salary Range: Depending on education and work background, the average wage for bookkeeping and accounting clerks is approximately $17.51 per hour in Minnesota.*

    Lake Superior College offers three programs in the administrative field. People interested in these fields should also look into LSC’s legal and medical administrative career fields.

    Administrative Office Specialist: This 60-credit Associate in Applied Science Degree program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and ability to seek employment as an administrative office specialist. In a work setting, they will often be in charge of coordinating other support staff and assume responsibility for composing letters, recording meeting minutes, collecting data and research, generating reports, accounting, and desktop publishing.

    Information Processing Assistant: This 36-credit diploma program is designed to prepare students for employment as information processing assistants. These office personnel perform a wide range of office tasks such as typing documents, transcription of business documents, filing and record retrieval, handling telephone calls and making travel arrangements.

    Office Assistant: This 29-credit certificate program provides students with the knowledge and ability to demonstrate keyboarding proficiency, utilize computer applications, and produce professional written business correspondence.

    Lake Superior College offers a 60-credit Associate in Science Degree in business administration. The program is designed to prepare students with foundational skills and competencies in general business administration and management. The degree enhances the skills of people already working in the business world, helping with career advancement opportunities. The program also provides general education courses for students who intend to transfer into a baccalaureate, four-year degree program.

    What are the outcomes?

    Upon completion of the Business Administration program students will have the ability to apply effective business administration concepts, understand contemporary business strategies, demonstrate analytical skills in problem solving and have skills in all facets of business, from accounting and management to interpersonal skills. Students will also have solid foundational skills in management, handling data and utilizing effective computer software applications for business administration.

  • Legal Administrative Support

    Opportunities at Lake Superior College

    Lake Superior College offers three programs in the legal administrative support field. People interested in these fields may also wish to look into LSC’s Paralegal Studies Program, as well as the general and medical administrative support programs.

    Administrative Support – Legal Secretary: This 36-credit diploma program is designed to prepare the student for employment as a legal secretary. A legal secretary assists in the preparation of legal correspondence and documents. Other duties may include public/client relations, timekeeping, information gathering, filing, transcription, and other general office duties.

    Legal Secretary Certificate: This 18-credit advanced certificate program provides students with the knowledge and ability to demonstrate keyboarding and word processing proficiency, utilize computer applications, and produce professional law office documents and correspondence.

    What are the outcomes?

    Upon completion, graduates will have the necessary skills to gain employment in a variety of legal business and office settings.

  • Medical Administrative Careers

    Opportunities at Lake Superior College

    Medical Administrative Secretary (AAS): This 63-credit, two year Associate in Applied Science Degree program is designed to prepare students for employment as a medical administrative secretary. The depth of the program, along with a solid liberal arts component, provides more opportunity for work in a supervisory role coordinating the staff of a busy medical office.

    Medical Secretary (diploma): This 57-credit, program prepares students to work in a medical office setting. Skills learned include transcribing dictation, preparing correspondence, and organizing and maintaining health information.

    Health Insurance and Billing: This 30-credit certificate program allows for some contact with patients. Duties include completion of insurance forms and basic claims processing for third-party reimbursements.

    Medical Receptionist: This 30-credit certificate program prepares students for employment as medical receptionists. They may be responsible for answering phones, scheduling appointments and preparing correspondence.

    Medical Transcription: This 30-credit certificate program prepares graduates for entry level positions in the field of medical transcription. Medical transcription is keying or editing digitally dictated notes into a patient’s medical files or charts, and assuring the accuracy of those notations.

    Upon completion students will have the necessary skills to assist with office operations in a variety of medical settings, including hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and private offices.

  • Paralegal Studies^

    Opportunities at Lake Superior College

    The Lake Superior College Paralegal Studies Program offers three options:

    Associate in Science (A.S. Degree): This 60-credit program is designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year institution in the legal field. Graduates will be able to demonstrate knowledge of legal terminology, understand court rules and procedures, ethics, and methods for conducting legal research and interviews, among many other key duties. This legal education is rounded out with a firm foundation in general education classes, improving the student’s ability to think critically and draw on experiences.

    Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S. Degree): This 60-credit program is designed to prepare students for paraprofessional positions in the legal field. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a wide range of tasks relating to legal practice. This legal education is supplemented by business education requirements focused on developing legal office skills.

    Certificate: This 30-credit advanced program prepares students with prior background for paraprofessional positions in the legal field. Graduates will leave with a solid education in basic legal principles.

    What are the outcomes?

    Employers prefer applicants who have completed a formal training program. They look for applicants with strong communication, analytical, and computer skills, all of which are addressed with the LSC Paralegal Studies Program.

    Salary Range: Specific wages are determined by the experience of the paralegal and the requirements of the position. In Northeast Minnesota the average wage for paralegals and legal assistants is $22.94 per hour and $25.50 per hour in Minnesota according to www.iseek.org.
