Part 1: Policy Statement
Lake Superior College is committed to creating a clean, safe and healthy learning and working environment, for all students and employees of the College. To foster this goal, LSC prohibits the sale and usage of smoking, vaping, and smokeless tobacco products on campus.
Subpart A: Tobacco Product Usage and Sales
Smoking, tobacco use, tobacco sales (including the use or sales of smokeless tobacco products), and vaping are prohibited on college-owned, operated, and leased property.
Part 2: Definitions
Subpart A: Smoking
Defined as inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying any lighted or heated cigar, cigarette, pipe, or any other lighted or heated product intended for inhalation, in any manner or form. Smoking also includes the use of vapor-creating products, designed for inhalation, or the use of any oral device for the purpose of circumventing the prohibition of smoking in this policy.
Subpart B: Vaping
Refers to any electronic oral device, such as one composed of a heating element, battery, and/or electronic circuit, which provides a vapor of nicotine or any other substances for inhalation. The term shall include any such device, whether manufactured, distributed, marketed, or sold as a vaping device, or under any other product name or descriptor.
Subpart C: Smokeless Tobacco Products
Smokeless tobacco products consist of but are not limited to, the use of snuff, chewing tobacco, smokeless pouches, or other forms of loose-leaf tobacco.
Part 3: Cessation Programs and Services
To support Lake Superior College students and employees who wish to reduce and/or quit using tobacco/vaping products, a variety of tobacco/vaping cessation resources are available through the Health Services Office.
Part 4: Enforcement
Enforcement of this policy will depend upon the cooperation and encouragement of all faculty, staff, and students. To report a violation of this policy, contact Campus Security.
In the case of violation, the person will be informed of the Tobacco Free Campus policy. For subsequent violations by LSC employees, the immediate supervisor will be notified. For students with repeat violations, the Dean of Students will be notified.

Part 5: Exceptions
Subpart A: Instructional Purposes
This policy does not apply to the use of tobacco or related products in laboratories, classrooms, instruction, experiments, or other artistic purposes that are college-sanctioned. All said purposes must be approved in advance by the president or designee.
Subpart B: Protected Class
This policy does not apply to specific activities of a protected class, as defined by Federal law, used in connection with the practice of cultural activities. This includes those of American Indians that are in accordance with the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, 42 U.S.C. sections 1996 and 1996a. All said purposes must be approved in advance by the president of the college or designee.
