Minnesota State Policy

Purpose: Emeritus status is an honor bestowed by the President to recognize an employee’s meritorious service to Lake Superior College upon retirement.

Criteria: Emeritus status will be considered based on a combination of the following factors:

  1. Length of service to the college; (minimum of ten (10) years)
  2. Significant contributions to his or her field;
  3. Dedication to the institution and to education;
  4. Significant participation in campus life;
  5. Outstanding service to the community;
  6. Esteem of students and colleagues.

Process: Emeritus status nominations shall be submitted in writing. The nomination process is open to any member of the college community. The college’s Administrative Council will review the criteria in light of the employees’ contributions to the college and make a recommendation to the President. Such individuals will also be recognized at an annual Employee Recognition Banquet.

Responsibility of Recipients of Emeritus Status: Emeritus employees are expected to continue to represent the college to the community and professional colleagues in a positive manner and support the college in their areas of competence, particularly in an advisory capacity.

Authority: The President may confer emeritus status upon an employee who is retiring or has retired from employment with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system based on Part 4 of the Minnesota State College and University Board Policy 4.8 Emeritus Status.
