Nationally Recognized Examinations
In addition to coursework from regionally accredited universities, Lake Superior College accepts alternative types of credit through the following:
- Advanced Placement (AP)
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES/DSST)
- Excelsior College Examinations (ECEs)
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI)
- New York University Foreign Language Proficiency (NYUFLP)
- Thomas Edison State College Examination Program (TECEP)
Advanced Placement (AP)
Scores of 3 or higher on a College Board Advanced Placement Examination will be awarded lower division course credit. LSC will grant equivalent course credit for a specific college course for each AP examination that covers substantially similar material.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
CLEP is a testing program of The College Board designed to measure prior learning and mastery of introductory (lower division) college course material in particular subject areas.

The Student Services Center at Lake Superior College administers CLEP exams. For information about the administration of CLEP exams only, please contact Stacy Langguth at (218) 733-7702.
To have a CLEP exam considered for credit at Lake Superior College, students must have an official score report sent from the College Entrance Examination Board. Details regarding how to send your report can be found on the About Your Score section of the College Board Website.
LSC will grant college credit to students who earn a score of 50 or higher on CLEP examinations, with the exception of Level 2 foreign-language examinations, for which a minimum score of 60 for German language (effective Spring 2008), 59 for French language (effective Spring 2008), and 63 for Spanish language (effective Fall 2007) is required.
LSC will grant credit for an equivalent course when a CLEP examination covers material that is substantially similar to an existing lower division course.

Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES/DSST)
DDST is a testing program of Prometric designed to measure prior learning in a variety of disciplines with 37 unique subjects.

To have a DANTES/DSST exam considered for credit at Lake Superior College, students must have an official score report sent from Prometric. A Transcript Order Form can be found on Prometric’s website.

Credit for the DANTES Subject Standardized Test Program will be evaluated using the ACE (American Council on Education) recommendations.
LSC will grant college credit to students who earn a minimum score recommended by ACE on DANTES/DSST exams.
LSC will grant credits for an equivalent course when a DANTES/DSST examination covers material that is substantially similar to an existing lower level course.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)
The IB program is an internationally recognized program through which a secondary student completes a comprehensive curriculum of rigorous study and demonstrates performance on IB examinations. A student may present a full IB diploma or certificate recognizing specific higher level or standard level examination scores.
Students must provide an official IB certificate or diploma to LSC in order to receive college credit. Transcripts can be obtained through the International Baccalaureate website.
Students who obtain an IB diploma shall be granted lower division college credit as follows:
IB Diploma
Students who obtain an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma shall be granted six (6) lower division course credits for scores of 4 or higher on Higher Level IB examination and two (2) lower division course credits for scores of 4 or higher on Standard Level IB examinations.
- Higher level examinations. A student shall receive three (3) or more course credits for scores of 4 or higher on individual Higher Level IB examinations.
- Standard level examinations. A student shall receive two (2) or more credits for scores of 4 or higher on individual Standard Level IB examinations.
LSC will grant lower division elective course credits when an IB examination covers material that is deemed to be college-level but is not substantially similar to an existing course.

Excelsior College Examinations (ECEs)
Excelsior College offers adult learners the opportunity to demonstrate college-level knowledge through a broad variety of examinations. 43 examinations are offered in subjects range from Accounting, Biology, English, and History to Nursing. Students must provide an official transcript of ECE results in order to receive college credit. Information about how to obtain transcripts can be found on the Excelsior’s Office of Registration and Records website.

New York University Foreign Language Proficiency (NYUFLP)
The NYU Foreign Language Proficiency exams test a student’s skills in a foreign language. Examinations are available in over 50 languages and are conducted at the NYU campus or an off-site location. Students must provide an official transcript of NYUFLP results in order to receive college credit. Official transcripts can be obtained through the NYU Transcript Office.

Thomas Edison State College Examination Program (TECEP)
The Thomas Edison State College Examination Program (TECEP) offers 21 examinations that a student can take to demonstrate college-level knowledge. These examinations correspond to courses at Thomas Edison State College, but you do not have to be a Thomas Edison student to take the exams. Students must provide an official transcript of TECEP exam results in order to receive college credit. Please contact the Center for the Assessment of Learning to inquire about transcripts.
