School Readiness Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator (Americorps Vista Literacy Leader)
Kids can’t get themselves school-ready. They need the support of their families, schools, and community—and they need you! Help us collaborate to improve equity and close the school-readiness gap. Join the Duluth Public Library’s “Every Child Ready Duluth” initiative and work alongside a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving school readiness city-wide. You will help vulnerable and under-resourced families voice their school readiness challenges and help the library provide more equitable programs and services to meet their needs. This is an excellent opportunity to network with organizations invested in family success and gain experience building connections, assessing needs, and nurturing relationships between parents/caregivers and their community. This is a year-long Americorps Vista service position, hosted through Literacy Minnesota. Serving as a Literacy Leader allows you to gain valuable experiences and skills while designing and carrying out literacy initiatives. This position is hosted out of the Duluth Public Library’s downtown loacation.

The Duluth Public Library is an innovative, open-minded, dynamic place to work, dedicated to a lot more than just books! DPL has a rich history of community engagement, providing invaluable resources to those most in-need, and promoting a love of learning and discovery for all ages, but especially for Duluth’s youngest citizens.

Duties will include:
• Working with community partners to build relationships with parents/caregivers and child care providers in neighborhoods with the highest levels of poverty to learn more about barriers to school readiness
• Developing a framework for bringing library programs and services into these neighborhoods and improving promotion for these programs
• Working with library youth services staff to develop a reading incentive program for children birth-kindergarten and their caregivers designed to address needs of identified neighborhoods
• Improving diverse representation in storytime programs by recruiting volunteer readers and assisting with reading schedule and recordings (if necessary).

Requirements:
• 18+ years old
• Ability to serve full-time for one year starting in August
• A US citizen, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee, or DACA recipient
• High school diploma or GED
• Ability to work independently and within teams
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Basic understanding of and ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel and to research topics online
• Interest in supporting parents’ and young children’s education and and improving community equity
• Flexibility, adaptability, creativity, and empathy

Literacy Leaders Receive:
• Living allowance ($513 biweekly)
• $6,345 education award or $1,800 stipend at end of service
