The Duluth Community Garden Program’s (DCGP) mission is to cultivate healthy neighborhoods by providing access to land, resources, and community. DCGP accomplishes this by renting community garden plots out on a sliding fee scale at 21 locations across the city. DCGP provides gardening related education and lends out gardening tools, cooking and preserving equipment, and books to gardeners and members. This internship will support DCGP staff with promotion and marketing with a focus on online content. The intern will be expected to develop and execute social media campaigns that advertise garden plot rental, promote DCGP events, increase the public’s awareness of DCGP’s programming, educate the public about gardening, and more. The intern will be expected to maintain a schedule that includes numerous posts per week.

Responsibilities likely to include but not limited to:

  • Planning, developing and regularly posting outreach material to Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms

  • Developing graphics and educational materials for DCGP workshops, events, and website

  • Promoting events

  • Taking and organizing photos for future promotional materials

  • Assisting with the monthly e-newsletter

  • Support other DCGP staff with signage

DCGP is a small non-profit and does not have the capacity to pay interns. However, DCGP highly values the time put in by all its volunteers, especially interns committed to a higher volume of service over a longer period of time. DCGP’s Program Manager will mentor the intern and help them to pursue their areas of interest. Possible examples of arrangements could include the intern learning more about nonprofit management through interaction with the DCGP Board of directors. Interns are also offered a garden plot with DCGP free of charge (the responsibility of the intern) May through October. DCGP is happy to provide documentation of hours worked, references, or a certificate of completion for whatever needs the intern has.

Seeking applicants who are:

  • Well versed in social media, basic graphic design software, and basic computer skills

  • Motivated and able to work independently without being supervised. This is very important due to the small DCGP staff and busy working hours during the garden season.

  • Creative with a good eye for design and informational content.

  • (Helpful but not required) Experienced in gardening

Interested parties should contact Megan Wylder, DCGP Program Manager at or 218-722-4583.
