Meghan Selhorst grew up in Two Harbors, MN. She graduated from Lake Superior College in the medical assistant program in 2015 and now works at the PS Rudie Clinic, part of St. Luke’s, in Duluth. Meghan learned about LSC when her high school class toured the college. “One of the things that really drew me to LSC over other colleges was how affordable schooling is plus how close it was to my home,” she said.
“Since high school, I thought I was going to become a registered nurse but after working as an CNA, I saw the stress, the pressure, and the hours that they have to work. None of that appealed to me.” Selhorst ended up going to LSC with her mom, who also went back to school for the MA program so mother and daughter were in class together. “Our instructor, Jennifer St. Arnold, believed in all of us students. If it weren’t for her, I would not be where I am now.”
What does a medical assistant do? “You are the person the patient first sees at the doctor’s office,” said Selhorst. “When you go to see your doctor, I am the person who calls you back, gets your weight, blood pressure, and the person you talk to on the phone. You are the “front line” to the doctor, every little detail goes through you before it goes to the doctor. You never have to work nights, weekends, or holidays! There are jobs everywhere for you. If you want to work family practice and see little of everything you can, or if you want to specialize in one area, you can do that, too.”
