3.41.1 – Procedure – Nursing Programs Admissions

Part 1: Selection Criteria for Acceptance to Nursing Programs
Ranking of applicants will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Assessment Technologies Institute, Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS) composite score divided by a factor of 10 (Ex: Composite score of58.6% = 5.86). ATI TEAS test needs to be completed by the application deadline date.
  2.  Program GPA (refer to program guide sheet).
  3. The combined total ATI TEAS composite score and pre-program GPA will be utilized to rank applicants for order of acceptance.
  4. In the event of a tied combined total ATI TEAS composite score and pre-program GPA, the applicant with the highest ATI TEAS science sub-score will advance in rank order for acceptance. If a further tie exists, the applicant with the highest ATI TEAS math sub-score will advance in rank order for acceptance.
  5. Applications of students not accepted into the program each round will remain on file through that admission cycle only. If a student chooses to reapply for the next admission cycle, the student must resubmit the entire application.

Part 2: Nursing Programs Application Process
Before applicants are eligible to apply for admission to the nursing program, they must complete all pre-program courses and requirements as stated on the program guide sheet. All applicants who have completed the minimum admission requirements and application procedures outlined in this document by the program application deadlines will be considered for admission to the program.

  1. General admission to Lake Superior College (LSC).
  2. Declared major in AS Nursing, AS Nursing Advanced Standing LPN Track, Practical Nursing Program, or PN Military Medic/Paramedic Bridge program.
  3. Completed Online Nursing Program application form (hereafter will be referred to application). Please note that the online nursing program application is in addition to the general admission application to LSC. After completing the online application, the applicant will receive an email submission confirmation (save this email). No paper copies of online applications will be accepted.
  4. A minimum grade point average (GPA) on identified pre-requisite program courses (refer to program guide sheet).
  5. All applicants are required to complete the most current Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI), standardized Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) prior to application deadlines and release scores to LSC. In certain cases, the previous ATI test may be used.
    1. Applicants must achieve a minimum ATI TEAS score of 58.6% to be considered for nursing program entry.
    2. If applicant has taken your ATI TEAS test at another institution, please have the transcript sent electronically to LSC through ATI. LSC will not accept any paper copies of ATI TEAS scores.
    3. There is no limit to the number of ATI TEAS test attempts
  6. To register for ATI TEAS exam create an account at www.atitesting.com. Once account has been created, click following link http://www.atitesting.com/ati_store/
  7. Application deadlines are listed below.
  8. Meeting the minimum admission requirements to be placed into the candidate pool for admission consideration does not guarantee admission to any nursing program.

Part 3: Timelines for Nursing Program Application and Notification of Admission Status
Subpart A: Fall Program Start – AS Nursing (60 students) & Practical Nursing (30 students)

  1. Applications will be accepted January 20 through February 15. Application submission deadline is February 15 at 11:59pm Central Standard Time.
  2. Notification to applicants by LSC:
    1. March 15: Applicant will be sent a letter of acceptance, denial or alternate list status via email. Admission is conditional pending all program requirements are met as stated in Part 4.
    2. April 15 (or the Friday before should this date fall on a weekend or holiday): Applicant must notify LSC of acceptance as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to notify LSC of acceptance by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
    3. May 1: Applicant must register for classes as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to register by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
    4. The following information must be turned in to the nursing department by the date stated in the acceptance letter.
      1. Signed acknowledgment which was included in acceptance letter.
      2. $50.00 non-refundable deposit which will be applied towards first semester tuition.
      3. All information listed as stated in Post Acceptance Additional Requirements below.

Subpart B: Spring Program Start – AS Nursing (60 students), AS Nursing/Advanced Standing LPN (30 students), & PN Military Medic/Paramedic Diploma (10 Students)

  1. Applications will be accepted September 1 through September 22. Application submission deadline is September 22nd at 11:59pm Central Standard Time.
  2. Notification to applicants by LSC:
    1. October 15: Applicant will be sent a letter of acceptance, denial or alternate list status via email. Admission is conditional pending all program requirements are met as stated in Part 4.
    2. November 15 (or the Friday before should this date fall on a weekend or holiday): Applicant must notify LSC of acceptance as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to notify LSC of acceptance by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
    3. December 1: Applicant must register for classes as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to register by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
    4. The following information must be turned in to the nursing department by the date stated in the acceptance letter.
      1. Signed acknowledgment which was included in acceptance letter.
      2. $50.00 non-refundable deposit which will be applied towards first semester tuition.
      3. All information listed as stated in Post Acceptance Additional Requirements below.

Part 4: Post Acceptance Additional Requirements
After notice of acceptance into a nursing program, the following information is required to be submitted to the nursing department by deadline stated in acceptance letter. Information requested must be received in accordance with said deadlines and remain current throughout the program.
Requirements include, but may not be limited to:

  1. Signed acknowledgement of accepting seat in program.
  2. $50.00 non-refundable deposit receipt.
  3. Copy of Current CPR/First Aid. Refer to program guide sheets for CPR/First Aid requirement.
  4. Completion of current Minnesota Human Services Background Study and National Background.  Information to complete each study/check will be included in the acceptance email.

Disclaimer
Prior to the start of the program all students must have a clear criminal background check with no unresolved disqualifying convictions. Applicant’s seat in the nursing program will be forfeited if applicant fails or refuses to complete the background study or background check, or if applicant is disqualified through the background study or background check.

  1. Completed health exam and immunization record, including current immunizations and tuberculosis testing, and/or requirements as defined by the clinical partners.
  2. Proof/copy of CNA registry, CMA registry, Military Medic, Paramedic, or other as approved by the Director of Nursing Programs.
  3. Advanced standing LPN Track applicants, Licensed Practical Nurses must provide proof of an unencumbered LPN license from the state of MN. The LPN license remain unencumbered throughout the program.
