Advanced Wilderness Search Concepts (12 hours) Fire-Rescue-Law Enforcement
This course is POST Certified
The Advanced Class is designed for proficient search technicians, law enforcement, managers, and planners who wish to increase their understanding of how to set up and run a missing person search. This block teaches: Legal considerations for Search and Rescue; specific ICS considerations to the wilderness search; Operational Awareness; modern Search Theory; Scenario Analysis; Containment Analysis; calculating Detection; news media relations; and search suspension. The class features a tabletop exercise where teams of students will plan and execute a missing person search.
There are no prerequisites for the Advanced Class. A review of the Proficient (Basic) Block is included; however, we will not "re-teach" it. Students will receive instructional handouts, case study handouts, land navigation protractor, Latitude/Longitude ruler, Area Estimator Matrix, the latest edition of Sweep Width tables, and a copy of Search Tracker planning software.
This is a classroom/tabletop session. There is no outdoor activity associated with the course. While not required for all attendees, students who possess a laptop computer equipped with MS Excel should bring it to the class.

Building Construction - Combustible (12 hours)
In this course, students will learn to identify and describe the three types of building construction as defined in NFPA 220 / NFPA 5000 (Type III, IV, V). This course will introduce and assist fire personnel in the identification of critical size-up factors related to the types of construction and the types of materials common to each of the different types of building construction. Students will identify critical information for the planning, fire suppression and fire ground safety. The course will also offer an overview of building occupancies with classroom discussions on possible fire suppression and rescue tactics.

Front-line Strategies & Tactics (12 hours)
This Course is designed to provide the student with the most current information and trends in the fire ground strategy and tactical considerations. Subjects will include apparatus placement, company functions, size-up and reading smoke conditions. A large portion of the course will be used to provide the students with the opportunity to practiced their command, communication and decision making skills in a simulated scenario-based environment. Student needs: None Prerequisites: This course is for any firefighter, officer or chief that has the potential of commanding a crew, running a sector or operating as the IC at a structure fire incident in the near future. A functional understanding of the Incident Command System would be preferred.

Rope Rescue – Basic (12 hours)
This course teaches the procedures for; selection, use, and maintenance of the rope rescue equipment and rope rescue systems. The students will learn the correct methods of tying knots, identify recommended personal protective equipment, construct single point anchor systems, select proper equipment and place edge protection, construct and use a belaying system, safely descend and fixed rope, construct and use a lowering system. Students participate in high-line rope system skills to simulate the rescue of a victim.
Student needs: Footwear with laces and ankle support, clean pair of leather gloves, helmet (fire helmets are not acceptable) climbing style or hard hat. (The college has some helmets) Students may use their own harnesses upon approval from the instructor. Clothing should be loose fitting and long hair should be secured to prevent entanglement. Dress according to the weather. Prerequisites: None
