Step 3: Next steps

After you apply, here are the next steps:

We will contact you

  • When you apply online, an email confirmation is sent to the address provided on the application within 48 hours.
  • Additional contact is made within two weeks regarding your application status.

If you have any questions or have not been contacted by us within these time-frames, please contact us at: admissions@lsc.edu.

Your to-do list:

Pay $20 application fee

The $20 application fee must be paid before we can let you know the results of your application. You can pay online, by mail, in person, or by phone at 1-218-733-7610. Financial aid does not cover the cost of the application fee.

If the fee is a hardship for you, please contact the LSC Admissions Office at admissions@lsc.edu for more information. If you’re a current high school student and you receive free or reduced lunch, please have your counselor email us at admissions@lsc.edu.

Submit secondary school transcripts

All international applicants are required to submit their secondary school transcripts. A transcript of grades should be sent directly from your high school to Lake Superior College. You must have earned the equivalent of a United States high school diploma credential, and your transcript of grades should also note that the credential was earned. If the language of instruction was not in English, the transcript must be translated into English by an official translator and sent along with the original transcript attached.

Submit post-secondary transcripts

Post-Secondary transcripts may be required for admission if the secondary work completed is not equivalent to a United States high school diploma. These transcripts must be sent directly from the institution of study to Lake Superior College and an official translation should also be sent if the language of instruction was not English. You may also have your post-secondary transcripts sent to either meet course prerequisites or for consideration of transfer credit; these must be sent directly to LSC from the schools of study.

Official transcripts can be delivered to LSC

Secure / paperless: admissions@lsc.edu
By mail: Lake Superior College
2101 Trinity Road
Duluth, MN 55811
In person: Bring in sealed envelope from the institution attended. Do NOT open the envelope.
All transcripts must be official. Please allow process time (2 weeks or more) to take place.

Minnesota State College & Universities (MnSCU) transcripts If you have attended another college or university (excluding the University of MN) within the Minnesota State College system, you do not need to order a transcript. LSC is able to electronically download your transcript after you apply.

English Proficiency

English proficiency is required and documentation of your proficiency is necessary in order for you to be accepted. Proficiency in the English language cannot be over-emphasized, as your ability to follow class instructions and your stay in this country are largely dependent on it. Acceptable forms of English proficiency include:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Use LSC’s DI Code 6389 to send your official score report from ETS.
    • Scores:
      • Paper/Pencil: 500 or more
      • Computer: 173 or more
      • Internet: 61 or more
  • Proficiency through the completion of an ESL program from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A resident of an English-speaking country or otherwise proficient in the use of the English language.
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) test score of 75 or more.
  • Acceptance into a particular program requires that students test at a certain level in reading, writing, and math when taking the required LSC placement test. Qualified applicants should be aware that some program class sizes are limited, which may delay acceptance into programs after the pre-requisites are completed.
Financial certificate

You will be required to submit a detailed Financial Certificate. You should not rely on financial aid from the college or employment in the United States as a source of income. For a vast majority of international students, neither financial aid nor employment permission is available as they are difficult to obtain. You will need to supply the college with a financial statement showing the total amount of required funds for the academic year before Lake Superior College will issue you an I-20 Form needed for admission into the United States. I-20 Forms cannot be issued until all admission requirements are met and it is determined that an applicant can be accepted into a degree-seeking program.

Proof of health insurance

Proof of health insurance and means to be evacuated: All international students and visiting scholars engaged in educational activities are required to purchase the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities international student accident and illness insurance plan (approximate cost of $1,162 per year) unless they can provide written verification that their government or sponsoring agency accepts full responsibility for any medical claims that might occur. Go to http://www.uhcsr.com/ to “Find My School’s Plan”, search for Lake Superior College and select the “International Student Enrollment Form” to sign up for insurance.

You may want to:

Release your information to others (like your parents or spouse)
Lake Superior College is prohibited by law from releasing your records to an individual (including your family) unless you complete a Release of Information Authorization form
