Semester in Italy - Fall 2009

In order to receive financial aid assistance for the Semester in Italy, you must have completed a 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The Award Letter you receive will list the types of financial aid you are eligible to receive for the 2009-2010 academic year.

This original Award Letter will be based on a cost of attendance for students taking their courses locally or on the Web. As it does not include the additional costs of a semester in Italy, you will need to contact the Financial Aid Director after you have received your award letter. She will increase your cost of attendance for fall term 2009 to include these additional costs. By doing so, you may be eligible to borrow additional loans to cover these additional costs.

If you are eligible for grant funding, the amounts remain the same whether you are taking your courses on campus, on line or in Italy. If you have registered fall term 2009 for 14 credits, your grants will be the same as they are listed on your original award letter for 14 or more credits.

Your loan eligibility is what might change.

If you are a dependent student, your maximum Stafford loan eligibility cannot exceed:
$5,500 for the academic year if you have less than 30 credits
$7,500 for the academic year if you have 30 credits or more

You may, however, qualify for a SELF loan for up to $7,500 if you have not already borrowed the maximum at your current grade level. (Note that you must have a noteworthy co-signer to qualify for the SELF loan.)

Your parents may also qualify to borrow a PLUS loan for the cost of the trip. They must, however, be credit-worthy to borrow the loan.

If you are an independent student, your maximum Stafford loan eligibility cannot exceed:
$9,500 for the academic year if you have less than 30 credits
$10,500 for the academic year if you have 30 credits or more

You may, however, qualify for a SELF loan for up to $7,500 if you have not already borrowed the maximum at your current grade level. (Note that you must have a noteworthy co-signer to qualify for the SELF loan.)

Information on both the SELF Loan and the PLUS loan are available on the financial aid page of the Lake Superior Website located at www.lsc.mnscu.edu.

Apply on your campus immediately. You should allow up to eight weeks for your financial aid request to be processed.
