What is a nontraditional student?

At the Center for Student Development a nontraditional student is a student who may be in one or more category listed below:

  • A student who is nontraditional by age and is 24 years old or above
  • A student who is a single parent
  • An adult learner who has never been to college or who is returning to college after stepping out

Why do we highlight services to nontraditional students?

Each year when planning for activities at the Center for Student Development we ask students to fill out a survey that gives us ideas for programs and services.  Students tell us how we may offer them support as they enter and continue working towards their educational and career goals.

What are some services that are designed
 for the nontraditional student?

  • A safe and friendly place to meet other students and connect
  • A place to find resources such as a free phone, a fax, a food shelf, emergency assistance and referrals to on and off campus resources
  • A monthly e-newsletter filled with events, resources and information
  • A weekly nutritional hands on cooking demo with the University of Minnesota Extension Office Magic Meals
  • A computer lab with work study staff and a professional staff member to help a student get started using a computer for school
  • The Center helps students locate and navigate  Lake Superior College's  many scholarship opportunities that are offered by the Foundation Office on campus. The Center also helps with outside scholarship applications. Scholarship workshops are offered each semester.

What is a "student success plan"?

A great place to start your personal plan for success is to visit the Center.  We can help connect you with many resources.  Also new to our campus is the GPS Life Planning tool.  This interactive planning tool will help you find direction as you journey on the road to success. The GPS LifePlan helps students set goals and design plans that will lead them to the success they desire. This program has the flexibility to be used by students of all ages and at all stages. Explore the web site to learn more about the 5 Plans (Career, Education, Finance, Leadership and Personal) and discover how they might help you. Just click below to start  your plan!
