Dr. Kathleen Nelson, President of Lake Superior College, Elected to Leadership Roles with Higher Learning Commission 

(Duluth, Minn.) - The Board of Trustees of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the accrediting body for more than 1100 public and private higher education institutions in 19 states, has elected Lake Superior College President Kathleen Nelson as Vice Chair/Chair Elect for FY07.  In FY08 she will become the Board of Trustees' Chair. 

Dr. Nelson has served as a peer reviewer for the Commission since 1992.  She was elected three years ago to the 15-member Board by her fellow higher education chief administrators. She has served for two years as the Chair of the Board Development Committee and will continue to serve an additional two years to fulfill these new leadership roles. 

"My upcoming work with the Commission promises to be a high point in my career," said President Nelson. "I am proud to serve in this capacity on behalf of higher education students, employees and institutions." 

The Higher Learning Commission is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The NCA, founded in 1895, is one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States. Through its Commissions it accredits, and thereby grants membership to educational institutions in the North Central region: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.  HLC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
