Frequently Asked Questions - Verification Process

What is verification?

What do you do with the verification materials?

I've been chosen two years in a row.  How come?

What is verification?
One out of three students are chosen for an auditing process called "verification".  The Central Processor chooses who must be verified.  It allows us to check the accuracy of the information our students are submitting on their FAFSA.  If you are chosen, there will be a comment on your student aid report and we will notify you by mailing you a verification worksheet.  You and your parents, if required, will need to complete a verification worksheet and submit signed copies of federal tax forms and W2 forms.

What do you do with the verification materials?
Our staff compares your tax form and other verification items to your FAFSA information.  If a discrepancy is found between the two, a correction is electronically submitted to the Central Processor.  Once the correction has been received, we can continue processing your financial aid.

I've been chosen two years in a row.  How come?
It could either be "luck of the draw" or your application may be failing pre-set edits that the Central Processor has established.  For instance, if the taxes you report as being paid do not appear to be correct for your adjusted gross income and family size, an edit will fail.  In either instance, you need to complete the process each year that you are chosen.
