Developmental Education Committee

Meeting Minutes: October 18, 2004

Present: John Arola, Jim Berg, Rody Bower-Hughes, Ann DeArmond, Wally Freitag, Kathy Grosh, Damon Kapke, Joni Mathison, Dan Miller, Nancy Schumacher, Paula Young

This was a special meeting of the committee to review curriculum and cut score changes in Math. Dan Miller and John Arola presented and explained the recommended changes.

  • The most significant change was in the placement into Pre-Algebra (MATH 0450) from the Elementary Algebra test. The changes will involve reducing the cut score 5 points for all the placements from this test.
  • The greatest amount of discussion centered around a recommended Decision Zone for students scoring 32-35 on the Elementary Algebra test. John said we need to use multiple measures when assisting students in this grey area. Joni and Rody expressed concerns and problems that this might cause the staff in Student Services. Joni offered to administer an exam prepared by the Math department to students scoring in this area. If she sees a student with this score, she will suggest the alternate test. Joni and Dan will discuss her involvement in this testing with her supervisor.
  • Dan explained the curriculum changes, which includes a new accelerated Algebra I and II (if passed, MATH0480). Following recommendations from across campus, MATH0460 and MATH0470 will still be offered.
  • Paula recommended prerequisite language of a set cut score (no decision zone scores) and having completed math within the last "x" years for the accelerated courses.
  • Ann also recommended advising guidelines for students taking the accelerated course.
  • John suggested this might be a time to re-exam the need for Tech Math I and II.
  • Dan will take all the suggestions from the meeting back to his department for further review.
  • The changes will not take place until Fall 2005; however, the finalizing of the changes will need to occur soon to accommodate the catalog, the 2005-06 schedule, and the advising/counseling report for students testing this spring.
