Academic Affairs & Standards Council
Meeting Minutes: February 1, 2005
PURPOSE: The purpose of the Council is to provide direction for the College president in all matters included in academic affairs, including course outlines, award requirement, academic standards, course and program components, and the inventory of course and program offerings. DATE: February 1, 2005 PRESENT:
MINUTES: It was requested that the minutes of January 4, 2005 be revised to show that proposals 141 and 150 were approved. On motion of J. Siiter, seconded by M. O'Mara, the minutes of January 4, 2005 were unanimously approved with the noted corrections. Curriculum Proposals The Math department submitted proposals 156-159 to clarify the prerequisites.
On motion of B. Adams, seconded by C. Annable, proposals 156-159 were unanimously approved. College Mission Concerns Proposal 133, MCS 2XXX, Voices of Hispanic Women and proposal 146, SPAN 2XXX, Literature and Composition were brought forward from the January 4, 2005 meeting for further discussion. Concerns were expressed that these two courses were clearly upper division and that the course content was too narrow and intense. These courses are not gen ed and may not transfer to a four-year college. At the January 4, 2005 meeting it was felt that proposal 133 did not fit the LSC mission and, therefore, was not approved and proposal 146 was tabled for further discussion to decide if it fulfilled the LSC mission. J. Berg indicated that at the present time there is very little to choose from under the MCS prefix and proposal 133 was brought forward to increase our international education offerings. He also indicated that proposal 146 was being offered for those students who have had four years of Spanish in high school because at the present time we do not have anything to offer those students. He also indicated that if a student tested into Intermediate Spanish we can only offer them two semesters of Spanish. He stated that this course is meant to be a review of language, grammar and skill building. It is his recommendation that these two courses be moved forward. After further discussion, J. Berg moved to reintroduce proposal 133, Voices of Hispanic Women, and bring it to the March 1, 2005 meeting for further discussion. This motion was seconded and unanimously approved. On motion of J. Berg, seconded by J. Arola, proposal 146, Literature and Composition was approved with eight votes in favor and one vote opposed. Other K. Halonen brought a question from the English department regarding the necessity of bringing changes in evaluation techniques, as stated on course outlines, to AASC for approval. It was stated that assessment and evaluation techniques are not included on the course outlines, but spelled out on individual syllabi, and do not need to be approved at AASC.
