Understanding Placement Test Scores

All new students are required to complete placement testing (Accuplacer CPT).  The purpose of the CPT is proper placement into reading, writing, and math classes. Your score in each area on the test  indicates whether or not you need any "refresher courses" prior to starting your program.

The reading, English, and math levels required are determined by the program you are pursuing.  Placement into refresher courses based on your scores is mandatory.  This may limit your course selection and/or entry in your program.

Exemptions

  • A score of 24 or higher in the English, Reading, and Math

For example, a student who received a 23 in reading, a 17 in English, and a 24 in math would only need to take the Reading and Sentence Skills portions.

  • Successful completion of college-level writing (Freshman English, College Composition, Expository Writing) may waive the Reading and Sentence Skills portions.

  • Successful completion of college-level math may waive the Math portion.
