New Student Assessment
If you are required to complete the New Student Assessment test, you will be assigned a date/time. This information will accompany your Acceptance Letter and Accepted Student Checklist.
What is the purpose of the new student assessment? The Computerized Placement Tests (CPT's) or ACCUPLACER were developed to provide information about your level of skill in reading, English, and mathematics. By assessing your ability levels in these areas, the CPT's help to determine the English, mathematics, and reading courses most appropriate for you at this time. The new student assessment is your first step toward success in achieving your educational goals.
Who must participate? The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) policy # 3.3 Assessment for College Readiness requires all new students to be assessed. Students transferring in college credits in English composition and college level math may be exempt.
Students who have scored a 24 or higher in the Reading, English, and Mathematics components of the ACT test may be exempt.
How will the test scores be used? While you should try to do your best on this test, please keep in mind that there is no passing or failing score. With the exception of Post Secondary Enrollment Options and Ability to Benefit students, the results will not be used for admission, and the scores will not affect your course grades. Instead, your scores will help you and your advisor choose the courses that are best suited to your present skills and needs. You will receive your test results and course placements prior to your registration session.
What does the test cost? There is no charge for the assessment test. If a re-test is necessary, there will be a $5.00 fee.
What if I need special accommodations? Students who have a verified disability that requires special accommodations for testing, please call the Disabilities Coordinator, 733-7650, to arrange an appointment.
Do I have to take the test at LSC? You are welcome to take the assessment test at the nearest Community or Technical College to your home and have the results sent to the Student Services Center at LSC. We will accept either the Accuplacer CPT test or the ASAP test. Test results can also be faxed to 218-733-5945.
How can I prepare to take the new student assessment test?
